Kelly holding her young child curled against her chest during a quiet moment at home.

I read a post today that described, almost to a T, how I feel day to day.

USED.

For the millions of little things that are MY JOB to remember.

Bills.
Dentist appointments.
Soccer practice.
Dance class.
School.
Parent-teacher conferences.
Bath time.                                                 Play time.
Sleepovers.
Birthday parties.
Planning birthday parties.
Oil changes on the car.
Car upkeep in general.
Cleaning the entire house.
Laundry.
Breakfast.
Lunch.
Dinner.
Snacks.
School lunches.
Decorating for the holidays.
Homework.
Reading time.
Doctor appointments.
Eye exams.
Grocery shopping.
Christmas gift shopping.              Haircuts.
Costumes.
Birthday snacks for school.
Football.
Baseball.
Pest appointments.

REMINDING EVERYONE ELSE WHAT THEY NEED TO BE DOING.

The list is never-ending!

And I KNOW that 50 years ago, things were different. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard, “Well, my husband’s mom raised five kids, and she did it all without asking for any help!”

I’m absolutely sure that she did! I know they did!

Between both of my grandmas, they raised 12 kids! My five is petty in comparison to that LOL!

But somewhere along the way, we kept the expectation that Mom manages the home and the children — and then added modern employment, finances, scheduling, administration, transportation, communication, school involvement, extracurriculars, medical coordination, and the expectation that she manages everyone else’s participation, too.

Ha! I’ll go live in 1940 or 1950 and do what they did without any complaints!

And just because I’m complaining does NOT mean that I’m not thankful for my family — because I absolutely am.

But sometimes, it would be nice to have a day just for me.

Just to sleep in.

To not worry about the bills. The hundreds of appointments. The places everyone needs to go. What everyone needs to bring. What everyone needs to eat. What everyone needs to wear. What needs to be cleaned, bought, paid, scheduled, signed, packed, washed, remembered…

To not spend every waking minute trying to hold the whole house together.

Me, circa 2010. Before I was Mom. Before I was everybody’s walking brain. Just Kelly.

Sometimes, it would be nice to feel some semblance of who I was BEFORE I became the walking BRAIN that has to remember every fucking thing.

And I know there are so many moms out there who feel that in their HEARTS!!

So, this is just one of those nights that got me thinking.

When do I get to have some rest?

Kelly

Feel free to partake in the chaos that is my life! 5 kids, a giant TBR list, dreamer of vacations, researcher of anything remotely interesting. Sums it up in a nutshell. Did I mention chaos? Lots. Of. Chaos.
