It’s 2016, and we’re headed to Virginia. Someplace in the mountains. 8.5 months pregnant, hot, swollen, puffy, and so damn EXCITED. Convinced the whole family to go – Mom, Dad, brother, sister & Ty. And of course, we drive – because imagine what we can see while on the way!

My final HURRAH before baby # 1 (unknown at the time) makes its appearance.

Naturally, I’m reading a book, and I glance up, and see a sign, “Historic Bell Witch Cave – EXIT 11.”

I glanced at Tyler… “Hey, Ty….”

“I saw it.”

“You saw what?”

“The Bell Witch thing. You want me to pull off?”

…..”YES!!!!!!”

I called my parents to let them know we were taking a detour… which they naturally thought was insane, but at this point they were somewhat used to my particular brand of insanity. They decided to keep heading towards VA, and we’d meet up later.

So, off we were. Just a quick, 20-25 minute detour, which we knew was undoubtedly going to turn into at least an hour or two. Excited is an understatement. I quickly searched for all of the relevant info about the Bell Witch.

If you haven’t gone down that particular rabbit hole, you should. Absolutely fascinating… unless ghosts and the supernatural scare you or you don’t believe, then carry on lol.

“Kelly… I don’t think it’s open.”

“WHAT?!?!”

“Well, there’re no cars, and there’s a gate in the way…”

“ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!”

“Well, we can just try again on the way back? Or we can go get you ice cream? Anything that will piss you off less…”

“Damn it. Fine. Just head towards Virginia. Had to ruin my whole damn day.”

We turned around, got some ice cream, and continued on our way to Virginia. Where we had an amazing time; gin was played, a dessert my Grandpa used to make and takes HOURS/A WHOLE DAY to make, was made, canoe rides were taken, and canoes were flipped into the lake.

Suffice it to say, Virginia more than made up for my Bell Witch disappointment! And I bet you’re wondering how that Bell Witch Cave really is…?

Well, I’d tell ya, if I’d been there. HAHAHA.

The craziest plans sometimes amount to jack shit.

It’s the journey, not the destination, all the time lol.

Later,

Kelly

Detours Are Kind of Our Thing 😅

This is exactly why I say I collect places — including the ones I don’t technically manage to get INTO. 😂 Read Speaking of Collecting… Places? for more of that madness. For a detour that actually delivered, come with me to Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, where getting me to leave was the problem.
